What was behind the white background?
In the summer of 1967 a young Peter Waldman answered the call for a photographer’s assistant. The following day he found himself in the studio with renowned American photographer Richard Avedon, who had come over to do some work in London. As if this was not already incredible enough, in walked The Beatles, who Avedon was photographing for the iconic solarised poster series. Half way through the session Peter had clearly made an impression on the photographer, because he asked if the young man fancied a trip to America to work for him full-time.
Peter Waldman’s talk will offer a unique insight into the close working relationship that developed over the following four years. Focusing on a number of notable images from this period, he will reveal details of Avedon’s personality and working methods. “Every day was remarkable, whether it was driving across the Arizona desert in a Ford Mustang with a 21 year old Cher singing on the backseat, or photographing Andy Warhol and his entourage in The Factory”.
This intimate talk is limited to just four people and will be held at Peter Waldman’s north London house, where you will also have the opportunity to view his private collection of Avedon prints.
Light refreshments will be provided.
