Emerging from the third pandemic lockdown, we were very excited to be able to finally offer our first Intermediate Printing workshop. This had been in the planning since 2019 and had to be postponed twice in 2020, so it was a huge relief to be able to finally welcome Ashley Wilson and Christine Walter-Saxena to the first running.
The session started with a review of a range of negatives they had brought along, to establish which would be the most interesting (and challenging!) to work on. Working with our printing tutor Phil Grey, the pair explored contrast grading options and were shown ‘dodging’ and ‘burning’ techniques to enhance their fibre-based prints. They were then shown how localised bleaching can bring out detail in the shadows and brighten highlights.
Having arrived at a collection of satisfactory exhibition quality prints, it was time to thoroughly wash and selenium tone them to ensure optimum archival permanence. Rounding off the workshop, Christine and Ashley were shown how to spot their prints in readiness for displaying on a gallery wall somewhere.
